Health and Social Care Secretary opens multi-million pound Community Diagnostic Centre in New Addington

A new Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) has officially opened in Croydon, offering thousands of local people faster access to vital tests and scans closer to where they live.

The centre was made possible following £14m investment to build two CDC’s in the south of Croydon. It is part of the NHS’ national programme to deliver more diagnostic services in community settings, helping reduce waiting times and hospital pressures and will aim mirror the success of the borough’s other diagnostic centre in Purley.

Located in New Addington, the facility will provide a wide range of diagnostic tests including ultrasound, X-ray, and CT scanning outside of the traditional hospital setting, alongside other imaging, cardiology and respiratory services.
The centre also houses a GP practice, run by Bourne Health, offering patients greater access to primary care appointments and joined up care when they are referred for testing or scans.

Speaking at the opening, Health and Social Care Secretary, Wes Streeting said:
“I was delighted to open Croydon’s new Community Diagnostic Centre today, marking a year since we set out our Elective Reform Plan. This new facility brings quicker, more convenient tests and scans right into the heart of the community - meaning people can get the care they need closer to home.
“It’s centres like this that are driving our mission to cut waiting lists and get the NHS working for patients again. Since July 2024, we’ve cut waiting lists across London by 99,000, helping thousands of people get back to their lives without unnecessary delay.
“Through our Plan for Change, we’re determined to rebuild the NHS for the long term, ensuring it is once again there for everyone who needs it, now and in the future.

Matthew Kershaw, Chief Executive of Croydon Health Services NHS Trust, said:
"The new CDC will make a real difference to our residents, providing faster, more convenient tests and improving early diagnosis and treatment.
“As well as fast-tracking access to vital tests, such as x-rays, CT scans and cardiology screening to help detect serious illness sooner, a diagnostic centre in New Addington will help to prevent the worsening of existing health issues and increase access to health  ensure our patients receive the care they need as quickly as possible, in a place that suits them.”
Omar Din, Chief Executive Officer at Bourne Health, said:
“As an experienced provider of primary care services in New Addington, and more widely across Croydon and Surrey, we understand the unique health challenges facing local people. The joining up of our GP practice with Croydon’s second diagnostic centre gives us the opportunity to create a more seamless, integrated experience of NHS care for local people and will support our own ambitions – and that of the Government – to put health at the heart of every neighbourhood.”
The launch of the borough’s newest CDC is the latest in a number of initiatives designed to improve to health services across Croydon.
The borough was recently selected as just one of 43 pilot sites for the roll out of the Government’s new ambitions for neighbourhood health and the local NHS has also started work on a new health centre in the south of the borough, designed to increase access to GP appointments.
