About Acute Oncology Service (AOS)
The Acute Oncology Service is nurse led, supported by two medical Oncologists on four mornings a week, ensuring that patients who are acutely unwell as a result of their cancer or treatment, receive prompt review and care in the most appropriate setting.
Acute Oncology Services aim to provide a co-ordinated approach to the care of cancer patients attending as an emergency or who are admitted
to hospital with any of the following presentations:
- Inpatients whom a first cancer diagnosis is suspect in an emergency settings
- Patients with known cancer who present as an emergency with acute complications as a result of non-surgical treatment, including systemic anti cancer treatment e.g. chemotherapy or immunotherapy.
- Patients with known cancer who are acutely unwell because of the disease itself.
The team liaises closely with our oncologists, multi-disciplinary teams (MDT) and other specialist nursing teams to provide the best possible experience for our patients.
They also:
- Provides expert clinical advice to colleagues within the wider MDT clinical teams who are medically responsible for looking after cancer patients during a period of acute admission
- Offers support and advice to patients and their families to help them make decisions about their treatment during an acute episode of illness
- Provides expert assessment and assists in ensuring that all cancer patients have a robust care plan relating to the management of their disease
- Helps facilitate an early discharge from hospital wherever possible
- Works with colleagues in the community to avoid unnecessary hospital admissions
