MRI scans
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan is a medical imaging test that uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves to create detailed images of the body. MRI scans are often used to investigate varying conditions affecting the head, spine, abdomen, pelvis and limbs.
MRI scans do not use ionising radiation and are a very safe procedure for most people.
However, because of the strong magnet, they may not be suitable if you have any metal in your body, such as a heart pacemaker. We’ll ask you to complete and sign a safety questionnaire before you scan, to make sure it is safe for you to be scanned.
The scanner is a large tube that is open at both ends. You will lie on a flat scan bed which is moved inside the tube during the scan.
MRI scans typically take 20-40 minutes, but this will depend on the part of the body being scanned. It is very important to keep still during the scan.
The scanner produces a variety of loud noises and vibrations. This is a normal part of the scan. You will be given earplugs or headphones to wear.
Usually there is no preparation for an MRI scan. You can eat, drink and continue taking any medication before and after the scan unless you have been told otherwise.
The service is available only at Croydon University Hospital site and the maximum wait is six weeks for non-urgent referrals.

Patients with suspected cancer referral should follow the urgent suspected cancer (USC) referral pathway.
