Celebrating the vital contribution of our SAS doctors
As part of SAS Week, we are celebrating the achievements and contributions of its Specialist, Associate Specialist and Specialty (SAS) doctors, whose expertise and dedication help deliver high-quality care to patients across the Trust.
SAS doctors are highly experienced senior clinicians who work across a wide range of specialties. Alongside delivering expert patient care, they play an important role in service development, education, leadership and supporting multidisciplinary teams.
Among the many SAS doctors making a difference at Croydon are:
Dr Syed Shah, Specialty Doctor in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, who works across Croydon University Hospital and Queen Mary's Hospital. Since beginning a UK dental career as a Senior House Officer, Dr Shah has continued to develop clinical, surgical and leadership skills through the SAS career pathway. Recently achieving Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons, Dr Shah is building further expertise in wisdom tooth surgery and oral cancer procedures.
Dr Rucha Madkar, Specialty Doctor in Radiology, joined the Trust in 2018 and has developed extensive expertise in General Radiology, with a specialist interest in Breast Radiology. In addition to supporting breast imaging services, Dr Madkar contributes to multidisciplinary teams across a range of specialties and plays an active role in service development within the department.
Mr Sajid Malik, Specialist Doctor in Surgery, brings international expertise in upper gastrointestinal, bariatric, robotic and minimally invasive surgery. Alongside clinical work, Mr Malik has built an impressive academic portfolio and is actively involved in research, education and international collaboration, helping to advance surgical practice and improve patient outcomes.
Dr Barry McHugh , Specialist Anaesthetist, has developed an autonomous anaesthetic practice through the SAS career pathway, supported by colleagues in the Anaesthetics Department and the Trust's Executive Team. Through expanded leadership, medical education and clinical supervision responsibilities, Dr Barry McHugh has continued to develop professionally while supporting elective recovery and helping deliver safe, compassionate and high-quality care for local patients.
As a signatory to the SAS Charter, the Trust recognises the important role SAS doctors play within an evolving medical workforce. Their expertise, leadership and commitment are essential to delivering high-quality care and supporting the future of NHS services.
SAS doctors make a significant contribution to the NHS workforce, bringing specialist expertise, continuity and leadership to services across the Trust. Their commitment to patient care, education, innovation and service improvement helps ensure Croydon residents receive the best possible care close to home.
Throughout SAS Week, will continue to spotlight the inspiring stories and achievements of SAS doctors working across the organisation.
