About us

Orthopaedics is a broad discipline of medicine concerned with injuries and diseases of the musculoskeletal system.  This refers to bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles and nerves.  Orthopaedics commonly investigates bone fractures, joint injuries and deformity of the spine or limbs.

Orthopaedic surgery may be required to treat a fracture (broken bone) or joint injury.

Our team

The Croydon orthopaedic surgeons are experts in all areas of orthopaedics with specialist interest in sporting knee injuries and replacements.  The team offer specialist knee clinics at Croydon University Hospital and Purley War Memorial Hospital. Knee surgery is performed by Croydon surgeons at the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre (EOC) an internationally recognised centre of excellence.

The team diagnose and treat a range of knee problems; sporting and ACL injuries, knee arthritis, meniscus injuries, arthritis, dislocation, stiffness and post traumatic knee problems.

The department compromises of over ten consultants and surgeons that provide care those referred with hip, knee, spinal, shoulder and upper limb injuries, fractures and dislocations.

The department also includes consultation and treatment for:

  • Rotator cuff disorders
  • Stiff and frozen shoulder
  • Tennis and golfer’s elbow
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Dupuytren’s contracture of the hand
  • Wrist ganglia
  • Scoliosis
  • Spinal TB

The team offer a regular fracture clinic for patients following an urgent admittance to Accident and Emergency or referred for suspected fracture by their GP.

 Treatment

The majority of orthopaedic surgeries are day cases and performed in the day surgery unit.  Joint replacement surgery is performed at the EOC.  The centre is an internationally recognised as a centre of excellence for joint surgery providing the highest quality, patient-centred experience.

The department works closely with other specialities within the trust. In particular there are close links with the [rheumatology] and [physiotherapy] departments to ensure patients receive comprehensive and joined up care.  Treatment includes:

  • Spinal surgery
  • Keyhole surgery
  • Knee replacement
  • ACL reconstruction & multi-ligament reconstruction
