Therapy dog Molly wins national recognition for spreading joy at Croydon University Hospital

Croydon Health Services NHS Trust is thrilled to announce that Molly, a gentle and affectionate cockapoo, and her devoted owner Babs have been honoured with the BBC Make a Difference Animal Award for their exceptional volunteer work at Croydon University Hospital.
Molly has become a familiar and beloved figure across the hospital, known for her calming presence and ability to lift spirits. Whether she’s quietly resting beside a patient during a difficult moment or greeting staff with her wagging tail, Molly brings comfort, joy, and emotional support to everyone she meets. Her impact extends beyond patients—staff members regularly express how Molly’s visits help ease stress and bring a moment of peace during busy shifts.
Her owner Babs, who volunteers alongside Molly, has also shown her commitment to the hospital community. Together, they visit wards weekly, offering companionship and emotional relief to patients of all ages and backgrounds and highlighting the unique role therapy animals play in healthcare settings.
The BBC Make a Difference Awards celebrate unsung heroes across the UK who go above and beyond to support their communities, showcasing inspiring individuals and groups making a real difference, with Molly’s gentle nature and Babs’ compassion standing out as a heartwarming example of kindness in action.
Jane Spayne, Volunteer Manager at Croydon Health Services NHS Trust said:
"We are incredibly proud of Molly and Babs. Their presence in our hospital is a reminder that hospital care is not just about medicine, it’s also about kindness, connection and making people as comfortable as possible. Molly brings joy not only to our patients but also to our hardworking staff, offering a moment of calm in the midst of busy days. This award is a recognition of the love and care they bring to our hospital community every single week."
Molly and Babs continue to volunteer regularly, and the Trust hope their story will inspire others to explore pet therapy as a meaningful way to support wellbeing in clinical environments.
