One Croydon Alliance shortlisted for two HSJ Awards

The One Croydon Alliance is delighted to announce that it has been shortlisted in two categories of the 2020 Health Service Journal Awards, which recognise outstanding contributions to health and social care.

Despite competition from more than 1,000 entries, One Croydon has been shortlisted for System Leadership Initiative of the Year, which acknowledges organisations working together across different sectors to deliver more integrated care, improve services and increase financial value.

One Croydon has also been shortlisted in the Health and Local Government Partnership Award category, which recognises where the NHS and local authorities are working together to successfully break down boundaries between health and social care.

One Croydon is a partnership between the NHS in Croydon*, Croydon Council and Age UK Croydon, originally set up to help tackle the challenges of an ageing population but now working to integrate health and social care for people of all ages across the borough.  Over 12 months, health and care staff brought together in GP-led ‘huddles’ supported more than 1,250 patients to avoid unnecessary hospital admissions, giving local people the confidence and support they need to stay independent and healthy for longer.

Speaking on behalf of One Croydon, Matthew Kershaw, Chief Executive of Croydon Health Services NHS Trust and Place Based Leader for Health said: "We're absolutely delighted to be shortlisted for these awards. This is recognition of the outstanding contribution made by all our partners in One Croydon, who have improved the lives of hundreds of people in the borough this year. We hope to build on these foundations to improve the lives of thousands more in the years ahead.”

Jill Kyne, Chief Executive Officer (Interim) of Age UK Croydon, added “Since 2017 we have been strengthening our partnerships to give local people the joined up care they need and deserve. Being shortlisted for these awards shows that Croydon is at the forefront of integrated care but also that we're achieving significant results.  We're successfully linking the NHS, council and voluntary sector to provide seamless care and support closer to home - this is helping people stay out of hospital and improving people's lives. These integrated care models are the future for everyone in Croydon. Congratulations to all involved across health and social care in the borough. We are looking forward to March 2021 when the winners will be announced."

Councillor Janet Campbell, Croydon Council’s cabinet member for families, health and social care, said: “This partnership is all about giving our local residents better, more joined-up care and boosting their independence by reducing unnecessary hospital stays, and it’s going from strength to strength. Teams across the council, local NHS and charitable sector are working closely together to make these improvements happen, and this award nomination recognises all the hard work that goes into it.”

Additionally, the HSJ Awards have shortlisted Croydon Health Services NHS Trust for the Patient Safety award, for its innovative ‘Rosh Board’. Named after its creator and champion at Croydon University Hospital, Chest Clinic Consultant Dr Roshan Siva, the Board is a new electronic system developed to care for and monitor patients with suspected or confirmed COVID-19. It ensures they receive the highest standards of treatment whilst protecting other patients in hospital from the virus.

The HSJ judging panel includes a diverse range of respected figures within healthcare, such as Sir Bruce Keogh, Chair, Birmingham Women’s and Children’s Foundation Trust, Mark Axcell, Chief Executive, Black Country Healthcare Foundation Trust and Caroline Beardall, Director of Workforce and Organisational Development, NHS England and NHS Improvement – South East.
