Croydon’s Autism Support Team celebrated for national impact
Croydon’s Adult Autism Intensive Support Team (IST) has received national recognition following a recent visit from NHS England, marking an important milestone in the borough’s ongoing work to strengthen support for autistic adults.
NHS England colleagues spent time with the team to learn more about Croydon’s community‑based approach. They highlighted how valuable their visit had been and expressed strong appreciation for the thoughtful, collaborative work being carried out across local health and social care partners.
This positive feedback reflects the dedication of staff from Croydon Council, Croydon Health Services NHS Trust, South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, and South West London ICB. Together, they have developed a service that places autistic people at the centre of their care, offering support that is preventative, responsive and shaped by neurodivergent‑affirming practice.
As a result of this work, Croydon has been invited to contribute to NHS England’s national programme on intensive support for autistic adults. The borough will help shape the updated Transforming Care: Service Model Specification, due for publication in 2027, and will also feature as a national case study highlighting innovative community health provision.
The team will continue to build on this momentum throughout 2026 with new research exploring autistic adult community health provision, as well as sharing its learning at a national event hosted by the Community Development Network for Learning Disability & Autism.
This recognition demonstrates the impact that thoughtful collaboration and a community‑focused approach can have. The achievements of the Adult Autism IST are a testament to the commitment of everyone involved, and the service continues to play an important role in supporting autistic people across Croydon.
Well done to the entire team for this significant achievement and for the positive difference you are making every day.
