About us

Adult Phlebotomy Services

Phlebotomy generally refers to the collection of blood from a vein. Most areas of medicine rely on blood for diagnostic testing.

We operate a walk in service at Croydon University Hospital and Purley War Memorial Hospital patients can visit at a time convenient for them during our opening hours.

Patients sent for a blood test by the hospital do not need to bring a letter with them.

Upon arrival, please report to the reception desk where you will be issued a ticket number for your blood test, you will be called to have your blood taken by the phlebotomists.

Most blood tests only take a few minutes to complete, and our phlebotomists are very experienced at taking samples from nervous patients.

Some blood tests require that you avoid eating or drinking anything except water (fasting) or you may need to stop taking certain medication. Please refer to the clinician who requested your blood test if you are unsure.

Paediatric (children's) phlebotomy

Children over 13 years may have a sample taken at the adult phlebotomy department; however, this is at the discretion of the phlebotomist and will depend on a child’s suitability. Numbing cream/spray is not used in the adult department.

On arrival to adult phlebotomy, we would advise that you speak to a member of the phlebotomy team so that they can carry out a quick assessment on your child.

If your child is under 13 years of age or it is their first blood test, it will be necessary to make an appointment at our specialist phlebotomy service for children based in The Willows unit at Croydon University Hospital.

The Willows Blood Test Service is open between 8.30am – 12noon and 1.30pm- 4.30pm and is an appointment only system.

Appointments from 8:30am-9am is for children aged 10-15.

To make an appointment please call 020 8401 3177 between 9am to 5pm.

It will not be possible to see children over the age of 16 in the Willows unit.

Most blood tests only take a few minutes to complete and our phlebotomists are very experienced at taking samples from nervous patients.

Some blood tests require that you avoid eating or drinking anything except water (fasting) or you may need to stop taking certain medication. Please refer back to the clinician who requested your blood test if you are unsure.
