Service overview
The service provides outpatient and day case procedures on site at Croydon University Hospital. All inpatient and emergency treatment is delivered at St George’s Hospital.
We treat
Maxillofacial
The service advises people who have been referred for problems affecting the teeth, gums, mouth, jaws, face and neck. The service offer day surgery for:
Minor oral surgery under local or general anaesthetic
Surgical removal of teeth
Biopsies of small lesions in the mouth
Surgical dermatology for face and neck cancers (excluding melanomas)
Outpatient’s clinics for:
Head and neck cancers
Facial traumas, both skin lesions and bone fractures
Facial deformity
Reconstructive surgery of the mouth and jaw
Restorative Dentistry
Comprehensive consultation and treatment planning and advice service is available to all appropriately referred adult patients.
Priority is given to patients with congenital or acquired dentofacial defects, requiring the rehabilitation of critical abutment teeth necessary for future dental health (for example following oro-facial cancer or dentofacial trauma) or those needing multidisciplinary care (for example involving the orthodontic unit or maxillofacial surgery department).
The team can offer the following specialist expertise:
Adult endodontics
Periodontics
Fixed prosthodontics
Removable prosthodontics
Patients should have a dentist willing to provide routine treatment and maintenance care during and after specialist treatment.
Most patients are returned to the referring practitioner with advice on their management. Some cases are treated for the specialist part of their care within the hospital service.
Orthodontics
The service is consultant-led and provides a comprehensive advisory service on all aspects of orthodontics offering advanced restorative dentistry, orthognathic surgery or dentoalveolar surgery.
The departments provide an advisory service for people who have been referred with problems which affect the teeth, gums, mouth, jaws, face and neck.
Treatment is available to correct complex problems that need specialist expertise or equipment and is provided on an outpatient or day care basis. The team is linked to the Regional Cleft Service at Guy’s Hospital and carries out the orthodontic component of treatment for local people who have cleft lip and palate.
Priorities for treatment services are given to joint care with other specialists, patients with significant congenital or acquired oral abnormalities and those with a significant medical history or a disability. Once the specialist component has been delivered, the patient is returned to the primary care provider (usually their own dentist) for continued maintenance.
Some cases are treated for the specialist part of their care within the hospital service.

Orthodontics is the specialty of dentistry concerned with the growth and development of the teeth, jaws and face.
The Orthodontic service is consultant led and highly specialised. It provides a comprehensive advisory service on all aspects of Orthodontics and treats multi-disciplinary cases requiring advanced Restorative Dentistry, Orthognathic Surgery or Dentoalveolar Surgery.
The team works closely together and provide joint clinics where appropriate to deliver specialist dentistry and maxillo-facial surgery.
The main departments are:

Restorative dentistry
Restorative Dentistry is a consultant led service that provides adult patients with assessment, diagnosis and advice for the full range of advanced restorative problems.
Restorative Dentistry includes the subspecialties of endodontics (root canal treatment), prosthodontics (dentures and bridges) and periodontics (treatment of gum conditions).
Patients must have a dentist willing to provide routine treatment and maintenance care during and after specialist treatment.
Patients will only be offered treatment at this hospital based department if they:
- require specialist expertise or equipment that cannot reasonably be provided within primary dental care
- have a significant medical history that affects clinical management
- have a “modifying factor” that increases the complexity of treatment for the patient.
Examples of specialist treatment include:
- Locating access to the root canal system
- Removal of fractured instruments from a root canal
- Initial management of tooth surface loss and temporomandibular joint dysfunction
- Management of complex prosthetic cases
- Dental reconstruction cases
- Initial management of advanced (moderate to severe) periodontal disease
- Surgical removal of drug associated gum overgrowth
- Multidisciplinary care, with orthodontics, of appropriate cases including hypodontia, gross malalignment and syndromatous conditions of the jaws.
