We are building a bigger and better Emergency Department (ED).

You can now find the Emergency Department and Urgent Care Centre (UCC) including out of hours via Woodcroft Road. This is a temporary move whilst we build a new £21.25m Emergency department for Croydon. The new department will be bigger and better and able to care for more people.

If you need any help to find any of our services or wards, please just ask a member of staff.

The temporary Emergency Department and Urgent Care Centre on Woodcroft Road is built in a mixture of modular buildings and newly-decorated areas of the hospital. But this is only an interim measure.

New Emergency Department

Croydon’s new Emergency Department has been designed by the hospital’s doctors and nurses specifically to be more open-planned. This will give clinical staff better line of sight of their patients to improve our safety and care.

The new Department, when complete will have:

  • A dedicated children’s emergency care department, with its own reception, waiting room and play area;
  • More beds to treat the very ill or injured;
  • A bigger resuscitation unit to care for critically-ill patients;
  • Doors on cubicles rather than old-style curtains, to improve privacy and dignity for patients;
  • A brand new Urgent Care Centre, for more minor injuries and illnesses.

Croydon University Hospital is one of the few London hospitals to offer on-site car parking for patients and visitors near to the Emergency Department. It is important to the Trust that this continues.

Patients and visitors can now park at the Woodcroft Road entrance, next to the temporary Emergency Department and Urgent Care Centre.

Changes are being made to where staff can park, to give priority to our patients.

In October 2015, the Care Quality Commission (CQC) rated the Emergency Department at Croydon University Hospital as “good” – but the CQC also said that the facilities can be better.

In March 2015, the Department of Health and NHS Trust Development Authority agreed funding of £21.25m to build a brand new Emergency Department at Croydon University Hospital. This will address many of the issues raised by the CQC and will give the hospital flexibility to care for more people in the shortest time possible when demand for services is at its highest.
