Blood testing (phlebotomy)

A blood test is when a sample of blood is taken for testing in a laboratory.  A clinician who takes a blood sample is known as a phlebotomist.

There are many reasons a doctor will request a blood test and they are one of the most common medical tests.

Blood tests can assess general health, confirm a bacterial or viral infection and indicate how well organs such as the liver and kidneys are functioning and much more.

Adult phlebotomy services

Croydon Health Services offers a walk-in blood testing service at Croydon University and Purley War Memorial Hospital with extended opening hours making the service more accessible and convenient for patients.

Most blood tests only take a few minutes to complete and our phlebotomists are very experienced at taking samples from nervous patients.

Some blood tests require that you avoid eating or drinking anything, apart from water (fasting) or stop taking certain medication.  Your GP or clinician will advise you before your blood test.

Children's (paediatric) phlebotomy

If your child is under 12 years of age or it is their first blood test an appointment should be made at our specialist phlebotomy service for children in the Willow Unit at Croydon University Hospital.

Children over 12 years may have a sample taken at an adult phlebotomy department; however, this is at the discretion of a phlebotomist and will depend on a child’s suitability.

On arrival at the phlebotomy department children over 12 years should be made known to a member of the phlebotomy team for a quick assessment.

Children’s blood test appointments can be booked by contacting the Willows Unit on 020 8401 3177.

The Willows unit is located on the ground floor of the Woodcroft Wing.
