Treatment

The service diagnoses and treats a variety of conditions including:

  • Inflammatory bowel disease
  • Liver problems
  • Gastrointestinal tract bleeds
  • Upper gastrointestinal problems
  • Functional bowel disorder
  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation
  • Pancreatic and gall bladder diseases
  • Indigestion
  • Peptic ulcer
  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Pancreatitis
  • Coeliac disease
  • Hepatitis

 

A specialist registrar in gastroenterology is available to do gastroscopy out of hours in theatres or intensive care unit. The team is part of the medical on call and accepts patients with various medical disorders, providing consultations on all wards at Croydon University Hospital.

 


Endoscopy

Services include diagnostic upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy, enteroscopy, and therapeutic procedures including removal of polyps, dilatation of strictures, insertion of stents, insertion of feeding and gastrostomy tubes and removal of stones from the bile duct endoscopically (ERCP) and nutritional support.

The unit performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures:

  • Oesophageal-gastro-duodenoscopy
  • Colonoscopy
  • Bronchoscopy
  • Endoscopic-Retrograde-Cholangio-Pancreatograph (ERCP)
  • Flexible cystoscopies
  • Fitting gastrostomy feeding tubes

The endocopy unit is open six days a week, Monday to Saturday (excluding bank holidays).

 


Referral criteria

Considerations:

  • For those patients on anticoagulant therapy -blood thinning medication require GP to inform patient to cease such medication three days before the procedure
  • Patients who are being injected with Tinzaparin may be required to attend the pre-op clinic with regards to an alternative form of therapy
