Fracture clinic

The department deals with patients who have been sent by their GP with a suspected fracture or have been diagnosed with a fracture or other significant musculoskeletal injury within the accident and emergency department.  The clinic is run by consultant orthopaedic surgeons, doctors, nurses and technicians to review diagnosis and treat fractures. The team works closely with colleagues in the x-ray department.

If required, patients can be treated in the plaster rooms by experienced plaster technicians, who can also supply and fit braces and splints.

Referral to physiotherapy can also be offered to help patients regain the full range of movement, as well as the provision of crutches.  Splints, review of surgical wound and other supporting treatments may also be offered, as well as further investigations such as a CT, MRI or ultrasound scan.

Patients who are having problems with their cast or injury must telephone for advice or an appointment. If problems occur outside of fracture clinic hours the accident and emergency department is available for patients.
