Operations and outpatient appointments continuing as normal
03 January 2018

There are several media reports today about NHSE suggesting hospitals can cancel non-urgent operations to help free up resources to cope with current pressures.

Below is a statement setting out the current position here at the Trust.

We knew that this was likely to be a very busy time of year so planned ahead to help us manage demand. We have opened extra beds as required and already have many of the suggested actions in place, including consultants on the front door and senior clinical staff streaming patients. Our Urgent Care Centre, GP Hubs and our Edgecombe Unit are also very busy looking after patients who need urgent but not A&E care.

We reduced our planned surgical activity at this time in anticipation of demand on the hospital so have not cancelled any operations due to bed pressures.

We have rescheduled 12 diagnostic tests that were due to take place today and all those affected have been informed. Our pre-booked outpatient clinics are continuing as normal and so we are asking people who have appointments to please attend at their allotted time.

We are very busy but coping, thanks in large part to our very dedicated and hard-working staff who are really going the extra mile. We would therefore urge the public to help ease the pressure on our staff by not coming to our Emergency Department if they do not need A&E treatment as there are other options including pharmacies, walk in centres and local GPs who may be able to provide the care they need.
