Upper Gastrointestinal GI Surgery

The upper GI services provide comprehensive care to the patients presenting with diseases of biliary aetiology such as gall stones, gall bladder polyps and inflammation of gall bladder. This involves keyhole operation to remove the gallbladder on elective or emergency basis at Croydon University Hospital site.

Elective gall bladder operations are now performed as a day surgical procedure avoiding the need for inpatient hospital stay. Patients with acute pancreatitis due to various aetiologies are also treated here by the expert team. Surgery for oesophageal motility disorder such as antireflux surgery and achalasia cardia.

Key hole surgery for inguinal hernias, recurrent hernias and incisional hernias are routinely performed here.

Except complex ventral hernia repairs, most of the procedures are performed as a day surgical procedure.

The centre wishes to promote laparoscopic splenectomy in due course. Surgery for complications of peptic ulcer disease such as perforation (burst ulcer), bleeding ulcers are routinely performed here. Patients with oesophago-gastric and hepato-biliary cancers are managed by  the multidisciplinary  team of experts  liaising with Royal Marsden Hospital.
