Maternity services

This page contains referral information for GPs.  If you are looking for information about our services for patients, visit our new maternity services pages for all the information you need.

Croydon Health Services is the main provider of maternity care for local women and undertakes approximately 4,500 deliveries per year.

Midwives work in the hospital and in the community to provide an integrated service to women before, during and after labour. The team aims to support women to give birth where they want and how they want, taking into account their cultural and religious background along with their health status.

Antenatal care is shared between our midwives and GPs, known as ‘shared care’. If there are complications in the pregnancy then care will be shared between our midwives and obstetricians and this is known as ‘full care’.

Women who register with our maternity services can choose to have their baby at any of the following:

At home

Women who are expecting uncomplicated pregnancies and would like to give birth at home will receive the support of a dedicated midwife from the Crocus Team.

Birth centre

Women with uncomplicated pregnancies who are expecting a straight-forward delivery but would prefer to be in a hospital environment can give birth in the Birth Centre. The centre provides midwife-led care in individual rooms, complete with bath or birthing pool, beanbags, subtle lighting and a home-like atmosphere.

The centre has been recently refubished and is a relaxed and welcoming place to bring a new baby into the world. It is located close to other maternity facilities should a woman require adiditional support during labour.

Delivery suite

The delivery suite caters for women who need additional support during birth.  The eleven rooms have ensuite facilities, bright, fresh décor, with adjustable lighting, individual temperature control and comfort cooling, to allow all women to experience as normal labour and birth as possible in a calm and comfortable atmosphere.

Each room has a computer so that midwives can update information immediately whilst maintaining patient confidentiality.  The maternity service has provided all GP practices with information booklets for recently-pregnant women to support them in choosing their maternity care provider.

We would encourage GPs to share these booklets with women to inform their decision-making and also to signpost the short films on the Trust website, which give further information.  A wide range of information and support for women can be found at Maternity

The service is happy to offer tours of the facilities to women and GPs.

Breastfeeding support in Croydon

The Croydon Breastfeeding Support Team work closely with the maternity services, with the aim to increase both the initiation of breastfeeding and its duration, through the provision of high quality evidence-based breastfeeding suppport services.

We actively encourage pregnant women to attend any of the drop-ins we offer, and would be delighted if GPs could signpost women antenatally to our service.

Baby Cafes

We run five Baby Cafes, one on each week day.  These are based in children's centres and are facilitated by a health professional/lactation consultant.  They provide expert breastfeeding support, however you do not have to have a problem to attend.  Pregnant women welcome.

Mum2mum breastfeeding peer support programme

The Croydon Breastfeeding Support Team in the community offers enhanced support in New Addington, Fieldway and Waddon (areas identified as having low breastfeeding rates).  Local mothers, who have breastfed their own babies, have been trained as volunteer peer supporters to offer breastfeeding support and encouragement to other mothers in these areas.

Home visits to women, both antenatally and postnatally, can be offered within these enhanced peer support areas.

Two breastfeeding peer support drop-ins take place every week - in Waddon and New Addington.  These are open to all pregnant or breastfeeding mothers wherever they live.

Waiting times

Mothers assessed by the team as requiring a home visit will usually be seen within two working days, however due to reduced capacity within the team this cannot always be guaranteed.
