‘Fast track’ emergency care at Croydon University Hospital helps patients avoid A&E wait

Croydon patients can now get ‘fast tracked’ emergency treatment via their GP through the Ambulatory Emergency Care (AEC) unit at Croydon University Hospital. A call from their doctor during their GP appointment can mean a very ill patient can be receiving high quality hospital care the same day they went to their GP without having to go through A&E.

This year Croydon Health Services staff are backing the ‘Spell It Out’ campaign to encourage potential donors not just to join the organ donation register but also to make sure that their families know they have decided that they want to help other people live on after their death.

This month Croydon Health Services NHS Trust celebrated its 13th annual research day with 86 projects on display to colleagues from across the organisation. New data shows more nurses, midwives and care staff on Croydon University Hospital wards

Data published this week (24 June 2014) shows that care staffing levels at Croydon University Hospital  met, and in many cases exceeded, planned levels based on patient need.  It is the first time that safe staffing data has been published for Croydon University Hospital and other hospital wards across the country.

Croydon University Hospital HIV screening programme a national first

Doctors at Croydon University Hospital have praised the on-going success of a HIV testing programme which has tested over 4,000 local patients and identified 20 new HIV cases, many of which displayed no symptoms of the disease. They are urging Croydon residents to take the test if offered as the earlier HIV is detected, the faster treatment can start leading to longer and healthier lives.

“Mrs Etwaree died at Mayday Hospital, as it was then known, on 23 June 2010 following a rare medical complication, known as an intra-abdominal haemorrhage, after an elective Caesarean procedure.  The Trust has admitted liability for Mrs Etwaree’s death.

Trust response to flood warnings in southern Croydon

As it currently stands, the Trust’s hospital services and community clinics do not expect to be affected by the potential flooding, however we are monitoring the situation very closely.  We are working alongside our resilience partners in Croydon to ensure that all residents continue to have their healthcare needs met. CHS maternity unit beats national average for Friends and Family Test

This week saw the publication of the national Friends and Family Test (FFT) scores for maternity units. Croydon mums who have used our service gave our maternity service an FFT scores of 79 for our birth wards, higher than the national average of 75 and the London average of 62.

COPD research bid success
Trust is research winner with £6m grant for lung disease project

Croydon Health Services NHS Trust is part of a successful bid for funds for a major international research project. A total of £6.17m has been granted by the European Union to support the project, which looks at treating patients who suffer from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD, also known as lung disease) as well as with other serious conditions. The Trust will receive over £230,000 of this funding.

Maternity Survey - Care Quality Commission

The results show the Trust scores significantly better than the average in areas including choice on antenatal check-ups and the involvement of partners in labour and birth. The survey in February also shows where services need further improvement including the choice given to mothers of where to have a baby and being involved in decisions about care.

Purley War Memorial Hospital, which has been under refurbishment since Autumn 2012 following a grant of £11.15m from the Department of Health, opens its doors this week to deliver new services for the local community.
