TIA Clinic
Transient Ischaemic Attacks (TIAs) are important warning signs that a patient may be at risk of an impending stroke. The most common symptoms of a TIA are transient hemiplegia, dysphasia or sudden visual disturbance.
Early assessment and intervention by stroke specialists can prevent a major stroke from occurring in patients that have recently suffered a TIA. This has been reflected in the NICE guidelines which state that patients with a high risk TIA ie ABCD2 score ≥4 should be seen within 24 hours of their symptoms. Low risk patients ie ABCD2 score <4 should be seen within a week of their symptoms.
A one stop walk-in TIA clinic is accessible, that runs from Monday-Friday 9am-3:30pm. No appointment is needed.
Once a patient has been seen at the GP surgery with a suspected TIA, the GP asesses the ABCD2 score (on the referral form). If the patient scores 4 or more, fax a copy of the completed referral form to the clinic number 0208 401 3741 and give the patient the referral form to bring with them to immediately to Heathfield 1 Ward at Croydon University Hospital, where the Walk-in TIA clinic is situated.
The patient will be seen by one of our stroke doctors and various scans and blood tests will be arranged and treatment will be commenced immediately.
