Childrens speech and language therapy service

A service for children with speech, language, communication and/or eating and drinking difficulties

The service is available for children, birth to 18 yrs, who have a Croydon GP or who attend a Croydon maintained school.

Staff work from local clinics and children are seen in a variety of locations which may include clinic, home, school or nursery.

Speech & Language Therapists (SLTs) work with parents and nursery and school staff to ensure that each child’s communication environment is the best possible to help them develop language and/or communication.  They sometimes work directly with an individual child or group of children.

SLTs also work with parents and nursery and school staff to ensure that children with feeding difficulties caused by physical or neurological problems are as safe as possible.

Speech and Language Therapy for Preschool Children

Service available for children, aged 0-4, who have delayed speech, language and communication.  Impact is a significant factor we take into account; for example, a two-year-old who understands perfectly, who is not getting frustrated but who is not yet putting sentences together would not be a high priority, but a two-year-old who understands perfectly, who is not yet putting sentences together, but who is getting frustrated would be a high priority.

Speech and Language Therapy for Children in Mainstream Schools

Service available for children, aged 4-18, who have delayed speech, language and communication.  Impact is a significant factor we take into account; for example, a fourteen-year-old who has a stammer but who is not frustrated by it would not be a high priority, but a twelve-year-old whose language is good but whose speech is difficult to understand and who is withdrawing from social contact would be a high priority.

Speech and Language Therapy for Children with Special Needs

Service available for children, aged 0-18 (19 if still in education), who have delayed speech, language and communication in the context of significant medical, physical or developmental needs

Children who have developmental delay would expect to have language delay to the same extent, so we would generally only see children who have a communication delay over and above their general delay.

Speech and Language Therapy for Children with Eating & Drinking Difficulties

Service available for children, aged 0-18 (19 if still in education), with eating and drinking difficulties of a physiological, anatomical or neurological origin.

Children who have developmental delay would expect to have feeding delay to the same extent, so we would generally only see children who have a feeding delay over and above their general delay.
